Rebecca Breeds’ Kangaroo Island subtly ties back to her Home and Away past—can you spot the Easter eggs?

Rebecca Breeds, former Home and Away star, is unable to fully escape her Summer Bay roots—even in her latest role in the film Kangaroo Island, where she plays a completely different character. The movie features two subtle nods to her time as Ruby Buckton on the Australian soap, something that both surprises and amuses her.

The first of these “Easter eggs” is described by Rebecca as a complete accident. In the script, the character of Lou (played by Rebecca) is recognized by someone as having been on a soap opera, though not an Australian one. The line goes, “Oh, you were Sasha the Tire Slasher,” which struck a chord with Rebecca, who immediately pointed out the uncanny resemblance to her Home and Away character, Ruby, who had a notorious storyline involving slashed tires and a stint in jail. She was amazed that the script had included this reference, given that the writer, Sally Gford, had no prior knowledge of Ruby’s scheming ways in Home and Away. Rebecca recalls her astonishment, saying, “What are the odds that she wrote that the character’s a tire slasher? How many other characters slash tires?” It was one of those moments that left Rebecca wondering if fate had something to do with it—perhaps, as she puts it, “this is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing right now.”

The second Home and Away reference is a little more overt. As tensions rise between Lou and her family in Kangaroo Island, Rebecca’s character gets into an argument with her father and sister. Amid the emotional heat of the scene, Lou’s sister Rosie quips, “There’s more drama than Home and Away,” a comment that can’t help but make Rebecca laugh. It’s a clear nod to the reputation of Home and Away for its intense family dramas. Rebecca admits it was a funny moment, adding, “Yes, there’s more drama than Home and Away—which is totally true.” Despite the humor, she also reflects on the grounded nature of the family drama in Kangaroo Island, which, while dramatic, is deeply human and relatable.

Kangaroo Island itself is a poignant and heartwarming story about Lou, a South Australian woman who leaves her small hometown in search of fame and fortune in Hollywood. However, after a series of poor decisions and an unexpected twist of fate, Lou finds herself returning to Australia, tail between her legs, to visit her family. Described as a “love letter to Australia,” the film is set against the stunning backdrop of Kangaroo Island and explores Lou’s emotional and personal journey. Rebecca shares that Lou’s return is not just about reconnecting with her family but also about confronting the past she left behind. “In doing that, she kind of baptizes herself in the beauty that is Australia and comes home not just to her family, but to herself,” Rebecca explains. The film is not only about Lou’s redemption but also about the healing power of returning home. It’s a story that tugs at the heartstrings, with moments of catharsis and growth that are likely to leave audiences emotionally moved.

Lou’s journey is both messy and beautiful—she grapples with the mistakes she’s made, but in the end, she finds a sense of peace and self-realization. Rebecca describes the film as “inspirational,” highlighting how Lou’s growth and healing process is something everyone can relate to. As Lou reunites with her family, she also mends the broken pieces of her life, culminating in a deeply satisfying and uplifting conclusion.

Though Kangaroo Island is a departure from her iconic role on Home and Away, it’s clear that Rebecca Breeds can never fully escape the impact of her time in Summer Bay. The film, with its layers of personal struggle and growth, seems almost like a mirror to her own career and journey as an actress. Through these subtle references and her performance in the film, it’s clear that Rebecca is embracing her past while forging ahead into new and meaningful territory.
