Maybe it seems silly to continue relitigating Friends two decades after it went off the air, but it always sort of felt like a missed opportunity not to have Phoebe and Joey end up together. At multiple points throughout the series, the pair expressed affection for each other that went beyond the platonic. Instead, the showrunners made a weird attempt at forcing Joey and Rachel together, inarguably one of the worst plot points from the entire run. Sure, Phoebe got her happily-ever-after with Mike, and don’t get me wrong, I like Paul Rudd as much as the next guy. And yes, it’s true that having all 6 main characters paired off with each other by the end might have felt a little too neat and tidy, and it’s equally true that “settling down” was probably never in the cards for Joey, but it is hard to argue against the chemistry shared between the two characters.
